Wolfpack History
Full contact football has a long, illustrious and at times troubled history in the Inland Northwest. There have been great successes including Spokane's claim to fame as the place where Oakland Raider all-pro quarterback Kenny "The Snake" Stabler got his start with the Spokane Golden Hawks in the late 1960s. Since Stablers days many teams have come and gone, the Fury, Nightmare, and Cowboys are all examples of the ever changing face of semi-pro football in Spokane.
The Spokane Wolfpack traces it's roots to 2005 when two separate teams, the Stateline Miners and the Spokane Sabercats started playing in the newly formed Evergreen Football League (EFL). While the rivalry between the teams was competitive, the existence of two teams in the Spokane market diluted the potential pool for players, fans, media attention, and revenue. In the summer of 2008 Eugene Burgess bought the rights to the Sabercat franchise and proposed a merger with Miners owners Joel and Koni Raes. After lengthy discussions it was decided that rather than fold one team into another a new entity should arise and a fresh start given to Spokane semi-pro football. It was decided by players from the Miners, Sabercats, and some new faces that the team would become the Wolfpack and colors would be columbia blue, white and navy blue. As the team was reforming changes were also occurring on the league level as the EFL reformed as the Washington Football League (WFL). All of the teams from the EFL moved to the WFL making a smooth transition into the 2009 season. Just prior to the start of the 2009 season changes took place in ownership of the Wolfpack as the Raes family, who had relocated to Arizona a few years ago, decided that the distance was too great to fully give the time and attention needed to elevate the Wolfpack to the place it deserved. Burgess took over sole ownership of the franchise and though the Raes contribution to semi-pro football will be missed and appreciated the future looks bright for the pack.
With a fresh start expectations are high for both the league and Spokane's Wolfpack. With the merger has come new traditions, values, and a renewed commitment to become a valuable part of the Spokane Community. We have a new home this season at West Valley High School and hope to continue to build on this new relationship. We have been joined by a wonderful group of businesses as sponsors who believe in semi-pro football in Spokane and are willing to support us financially. The overwhelming desire to compete for a league championship and continue to play this great sport of football still drives the players, coaches and administrators, but it is with an eye to the long term success of the franchise that the Wolfpack has been established. The ownership is intent on building a family atmosphere within the team, staff and with our fans. We want to not only entertain with high quality football but also to help our community. That is why you will see the Wolfpack contributing time effort and financial resources to assorted charities and events.
Under the direction of Head Coach Eugene Burgess the offensive should be explosive as he molds his offensive weapons into a force in this league. Jim Nendel heads the defensive side of the ball, and with the caliber of players he has should make it very difficult for other teams to put many points on the board.
Coach Burgess has surrounded himself with very knowledgeable assistant coaches to aid in the development of the team. Tyler Brett is responsible for the Offensive Line, Joe Mitchell has the Receivers, Dave Gove will shore up the Defensive Line, Greg Harmon will give the team a strong ground game with the running backs, Sean Brewer will man the special teams, and Randy Worrell will keep the D-Line hungry.
With the dedication of the Coaches, Players, Sponsors, Support Staff, and all of our wonderful fans, the Wolfpack is poised to rival and challenge each team for the Washington Football League Championship.
